Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an action-adventure game which is developed by Insomniac Games and is published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was first released on the platform PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2020. It is the second installment in Marvel’s Spider-Man series which is following Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. The story is mainly about Miles finding the balance of being a civilian persona and Spider-Man when Harlem is threatened by a war between the Roxxon Energy Corporation and the Tinkerer’s high-tech criminal army.
There is not much difference between Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) no matter in the mechanisms, systems, and map. In the map, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales uses exactly the same map but it added the Christmas’s atmosphere in the city as the story is happening during Christmas. The city is covered in snow and the buildings are full of decorations. The control and motion of Miles are similar to Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2018 version. The combat combos are similar too. However, there is still some difference between the two versions. Miles only has four items for him to use but Peter Parker has eight kinds of items. That may decrease the diversity of Miles’ attack pattern. Thus, there is a new power for Miles to use. It is one of the main features of this game. Miles is able to use Venom Blast which allows the player to incapacitate enemies with bioelectricity and charge or drain electronics. Furthermore, Miles has the ability to be temporarily invisible which can help him to kill enemies in stealth.
The stealth killing system has a huge improvement while comparing with the previous one. In the previous one, players are only able to kill enemies with stealth in the first wave. For the following waves, players will be witnessed by the enemies automatically even if players are hiding. In Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Players are able to stealth and kill enemies quickly in the whole battle or in the whole level without being witnessed by others automatically. Furthermore, even if players are witnessed by others, players still can use the invisible ability to hide again. That makes the power a little bit too.
Also, the timeline of the main storyline is only around 7 hours. It is less when compared with the previous one. A shorter main storyline makes the game not rich enough and introductions of all the systems are compressed in a short period of time makes the game not player-friendly as not much time for players to understand and get used to all the systems. Even though there are side missions to enrich the gameplay content, there is still a huge problem. Usually, those side missions provide rewards towards players when they finish the missions such as new suits and skills. However, players are not able to try those new abilities or suits for a long period of time due to the length of the main storyline. That makes the new abilities and suits useless as players cannot really enjoy them.
In addition, the game makes good use of Sony's new controller. It perfectly exerts the potential and advantages of the controller. The new controller includes the DualSense function that offers further immersion to players. The controller can only buzz on the right half based on the game environment or game situation.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an excellent game to show the potential of PlayStation 5. The DualSense controller makes the game more spectacular. However, the game content is not rich enough.
